Nitrous oxide at the Dentist

Relaxed treatment — safe, proven and well tolerated.

Nitrous oxide has been used in medicine with great success for more than 150 years. Its chemical name is dinitrogen monoxide, or N2O for short. You receive the nitrous oxide via a special device. With the help of a mixer, called a flowmeter, the nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen. The concentration of the gas can even be adjusted together with you during the treatment.

The patient is conscious throughout the entire treatment and says how they feel. The nitrous oxide is administered via a special nasal mask that is worn throughout the treatment. The nasal masks are very comfortable and, thanks to their various scents, give the treatment a pleasant and soothing character.

Calming, anxiety-reducing and pain-relieving
How does nitrous oxide work?

Calming, anxiety-reducing and pain-relieving

Nitrous oxide at the dentist has a calming, anxiety-reducing and pain-relieving effect at the same time. However, you never lose consciousness and remain responsive throughout the entire treatment.

After treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for 3 minutes and the effect wears off shortly afterwards. You are fit to drive again. An accompanying person is therefore not necessary.

How safe is nitrous oxide sedation?

A proven procedure — also suitable for children

Dental nitrous oxide sedation is a safe and proven procedure and has long been part of everyday practice in many countries. This can be seen in the example of the USA, where the use of nitrous oxide is standard in most dental practices.

Because it is so safe, this treatment method is also very well suited for children and helps to prevent a fear of dental treatment from developing in the first place.
