Rubber dam: dry, germ-free and safe treatments
What is a rubber dam?
A rubber dam is an elastic rubber sheet used in dentistry to shield the dentist’s working field from the rest of the mouth. It is attached to the tooth with clamps and keeps saliva and moisture away from the working field – the basic prerequisite for long-lasting composite and ceramic fillings.
Rubber dam, a tool of modern dentistry
A rubber dam is a tool of modern dentistry. It is a large rubber sheet that is placed in the mouth using clamps and rubber dam forceps and stretched out like a sail. All teeth except those to be treated are covered by the rubber sheet. This seals off the dentist’s working field from the rest of the mouth, similar to a surgeon’s operating field. This procedure is used in particular for root canal treatment, composite fillings, ceramic inlays or amalgam removal. The inflow of saliva and the effect of moisture from the breath can thus be prevented.

Bonding technique and rubber dam: why a dry foundation is crucial
One of the greatest advances in modern dentistry is the introduction of the bonding technique. With it, composites can be bonded directly to the teeth. They are used in minimally invasive filling techniques and as an adhesive for ceramic materials, for example to fix ceramic inlays, onlays or ceramic partial crowns.
Every DIY enthusiast knows that bonded joints must be dry – and it is the same with teeth. Here, even the moisture in the breath is enough to prevent the material from bonding properly with the tooth structure, resulting in leaks at the filling margin and thus points of attack for new decay. Such fillings are described as insufficient and can often already be recognised by brownish discoloured filling margins. In these cases, the rubber dam can have a positive influence on the longevity of the filling.
Rubber dam: the benefits at a glance
- Saliva-free working, the optimal prerequisite for long-lasting fillings
- Protection against swallowing or inhaling foreign bodies
- No annoying suction of water during treatment
- Psychological comfort: treatment feels less invasive
- Germ-free working field, lower risk of infection
- Longer durability of composite and ceramic fillings thanks to a tight filling margin
Sit back and relax – why the rubber dam gives you safety and peace of mind
It is completely understandable if the idea of a sheet stretched in your mouth seems unfamiliar or even a little oppressive at first. Many patients worry in advance whether they will still be able to breathe or swallow freely.
Experience shows, however, that this initial hesitation turns into great relief after just a few minutes:
- Your personal protective shieldThe rubber dam gently separates the treatment field from the rest of the mouth. The continuous suction of rinsing water in the throat, which is often perceived as disturbing, is almost completely eliminated. No water flows into your throat, and you can swallow your own saliva quite normally and calmly during treatment.
- No worries about foreign bodiesThere is no risk of swallowing or inhaling fine instruments, rinsing fluids or old amalgam and crown remnants – the elastic sheet catches everything safely.
- A feeling of distanceThanks to the isolation, it feels as if the treatment is not taking place directly in your mouth, but “outside” it. This helps you mentally to lean back and relax during the appointment, listen to music or switch off.
Our well-coordinated team proceeds particularly sensitively, explains every step to you in advance and ensures that you feel absolutely safe and comfortable at every stage of the treatment.

Do you have any further questions about the rubber dam?
Yes, absolutely. Your nose remains completely free throughout the treatment, so you can breathe in and out calmly and evenly. Even if your nose is slightly blocked, the elastic sheet can be positioned so that you can continue to breathe without any problems. Our team keeps an eye on how you are feeling at all times.
No, placing it is usually painless. The sheet is gently fixed to the affected tooth with a small, elastic clamp, which is usually only perceived as a brief, slight pressure.
We use the rubber dam whenever absolute sterility and dryness are crucial for the long-term success of the therapy. This applies in particular to root canal treatments (endodontics), composite fillings & ceramic inlays, and safe amalgam removal.
Modern, aesthetic dental materials (such as composites and ceramics) are bonded to the tooth. Even the smallest amount of moisture from saliva or breath can weaken this bond. By keeping the working field absolutely dry, the rubber dam ensures maximum adhesion and thus a significantly longer durability of your fillings and inlays.
