Veneers – smileDentity Glossary
What are veneers?
A harmonious smile contributes significantly to personal well-being and a positive aura. Modern aesthetic dentistry offers highly developed ways of gently and permanently correcting small visual irregularities. Veneers are a particularly gentle method in this field.
Veneers are thin, custom-made facings, usually made of ceramic. They are attached to the visible outer surfaces of the teeth using a special dental bonding procedure. Especially in the front teeth, they can harmoniously change the colour, shape and proportions of individual teeth and compensate for minor aesthetic irregularities.
Depending on the initial situation, veneers can be placed in a very tooth-conserving way. Often, however, minor preparation of the tooth enamel is required. So-called no-prep veneers are only an option in selected cases. Whether veneers are suitable depends, among other things, on the existing tooth structure, the gums, the position of the teeth and the bite situation.

When are veneers used?
Veneers may be an option when teeth in the visible area are to be changed aesthetically. Typical areas of application are:
- Stubborn discolouration or enamel defects: When professional teeth whitening is not expected to achieve a sufficient or even change – or, for example, in the case of medication-related discolouration or enamel defects.
- Gaps between teeth and misalignments: Irregular contours or shortened front teeth (e.g. also a diastema) or slight misalignments can be corrected without lengthy orthodontic treatment.
- Worn or damaged teeth: Minor defects of shape and substance, chipped corners or tooth crowns shortened by teeth grinding can be rebuilt visually and functionally.
- Irregular tooth shapes: Teeth that are too small, pointed or asymmetrical can be harmoniously adapted to the neighbouring teeth.
What should be considered before treatment with veneers?
The prerequisites are healthy teeth and healthy gums as well as a suitable bite situation. In the case of tooth decay, inflammation or pronounced teeth grinding, treatment or particularly careful planning is required first. Depending on the findings, teeth whitening, composite build-ups or orthodontic treatment may be the more tooth-conserving alternative. If tooth enamel has to be removed, the treatment is not completely reversible. Which solution is suitable is decided after an individual examination.
